Every New Testament manuscript was written in capitals like this one — no lower case, and no spaces between the words.

The Phoenician drawing is the same one the Hebrew hall uses for that letter — at this date the two scripts were one alphabet in two neighbouring hands. The archaic Greek form is simplified from published hand-copies of the early inscriptions, not a facsimile of any single stone: early Greek scribes varied wildly, and wrote right to left as readily as left to right.

In the New Testament's day a p with a puff of breath after it — p-h, which is why English spells these words with ph. It hardened into a plain f later, and modern Greek says f.

From phi come two of the New Testament's most quoted words. Phōs is light — the first thing God makes, and John's first description of what came into the world. And phileō is love as friendship and affection, the warmer and more personal of the two great love words.

English carries a great many phi words because Latin borrowed them with ph rather than f: philosophy, prophet, physical, Philip. Every one of them is a Greek word wearing a Roman spelling.

Where the New Testament uses this letter

Light, and the darkness that could not put it out

John's prologue puts light and darkness in one sentence and leaves the verb ambiguous on purpose: the darkness did not katalambanō the light — did not grasp it, did not overcome it. Translators have to pick; the Greek holds both.

Fear that is not fright

Phobos runs the whole range from terror to reverence, and the New Testament uses both ends. “Perfect love casts out fear” and “the fear of the Lord” are the same noun, doing opposite work — which is why context, not the dictionary, settles it.

How readers have read this letter

✧“Do you love me?” — the two verbs in John 21a reading

In the conversation on the beach, Jesus asks twice using agapaō and Peter answers each time using phileō; the third time Jesus switches to Peter's word, and Peter is grieved. Many readers hear a whole pastoral drama in that switch — Jesus asking for the higher love, Peter unable to claim more than friendship, and Jesus finally meeting him where he is.

It is a moving reading, and a great many good teachers have preached it.

  • “Do you love me?” — the two verbs in John 21

    The passage swaps several word pairs in the same breath, not just this one: two verbs for “feed” and “tend,” two nouns for “lambs” and “sheep,” and two verbs for “know.” That pattern looks like John's ordinary habit of varying his vocabulary, and many careful commentators conclude the agapaō/phileō change is style rather than significance. The two verbs also overlap heavily elsewhere in John — the Father is said to phileō the Son. Worth knowing before the sermon is built on it.
