The Rapture

Four passages promise it and none of them dates it. The church is caught up to meet the Lord in the air, that much is not in dispute among those who take the texts as they stand. What is disputed is where on the line it happens: before Daniel's seventieth week, at its midpoint, after the great tribulation but before the wrath, or at the return itself. Here are the anchor texts, then all four positions plotted on one timeline, then the case for each in its own words. This site's tradition is pre-tribulational, stated after the others have been heard.

1 Thessalonians 4:13–18 →

“The Lord himself shall descend from heaven, with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first; then we that are alive, that are left, shall together with them be caught up in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air.”ASV

What it establishes

That there is a catching-up at all, that the dead in Christ precede the living, that it is loud and public rather than secret in the sense of silent, and that Paul gives it as comfort to grieving people.

What it leaves open

It does not say when, relative to any tribulation. Paul's pastoral question is who goes first, not what year it is.

What it establishes

That the living are transformed rather than merely relocated (the mortal puts on immortality), and that it is instantaneous.

What it leaves open

The phrase “the last trump” is the hinge of an entire position. Whether it is the last of a series of gathering-trumpets or the seventh trumpet of Revelation 11 is exactly what is disputed.

What it establishes

The promise in Jesus' own words, and its shape: He comes for His people to take them where He is. The direction of travel is toward the Father's house.

What it leaves open

No chronology at all, and readers who see one return rather than two take this as describing the same event as Matthew 24.

What it establishes

A promise of keeping, made to a faithful church, concerning a trial that is worldwide rather than local, which is why it is read eschatologically and not only of Philadelphia's own century.

What it leaves open

Whether “keep from” means removal out of the hour or preservation through it. Both are ordinary senses of the phrase, and this single preposition carries more freight in this debate than any other word.

On the word itself: “rapture” is not in the English Bible. It reaches us through the Latin of 1 Thessalonians 4:17, where the verb rendered caught up was translated rapiemur: we shall be seized. The underlying Greek verb is the same one used of Philip being carried off after the Ethiopian's baptism and of Paul caught up to the third heaven: a sudden, forcible removal by God. The doctrine does not stand or fall on the English word.

Pre-tribulational

This site's tradition

Held by The dispensational stream: Darby, Scofield, Walvoord, and Hal Lindsey (The Late Great Planet Earth, 1970). On this site's own line, Chuck Missler, The Book of Revelation, is the load-bearing modern voice.

Its best case

The church is addressed directly and by name through chapters 2 and 3, and then is simply not in the earth-scenes of chapters 4 to 19, where the actors are Israel, the nations, the martyrs and the saints of the tribulation. John himself hears “come up hither” at 4:1 and is in heaven for the rest of the book. Philadelphia is promised keeping from the hour of trial rather than in it. The week itself is Daniel's, decreed on Daniel's people and city, and Jeremiah calls that time Jacob's trouble: Israel's reckoning, not the church's. And only this position preserves genuine imminence: if nothing must happen first, then “watch” means watch.

Its hardest problem

No passage plainly describes two future comings separated by seven years; the distinction is assembled from several texts rather than read off one. “keep thee from the hour of trial” can mean preservation within as easily as removal from; the same construction is used in John 17 of keeping disciples from the evil one while they remain in the world. And the argument from the church's absence in chapters 4–19 is an argument from silence, which is the weakest kind of argument even when it is right.

Mid-tribulational

Held by A smaller stream within premillennial futurism, associated with readers who tie the catching-up to the seventh trumpet of Revelation 11:15.

Its best case

Paul says the change happens “at the last trump”, and Revelation has a numbered series of trumpets whose seventh is the last, and at that seventh, the kingdom of the world becomes the kingdom of our Lord. In the same chapter the two witnesses are called up to heaven with the very words spoken to John at 4:1. The great tribulation proper begins at the midpoint, after the abomination stands in the holy place, so on this reading the church is spared the worst half while sharing the first.

Its hardest problem

The seventh trumpet is not obviously located at the middle of the week, and Paul's “last trump” more naturally belongs to the gathering-trumpets of Israel than to a series of judgment blasts. The position also gives up imminence entirely: on this scheme the week must begin, the covenant must be signed, and three and a half years must run before the hope can be realised.

Pre-wrath

Held by Articulated as a distinct system in the late twentieth century: Marvin Rosenthal's The Pre-Wrath Rapture of the Church is its standard statement.

Its best case

It makes a distinction the other schemes often blur: man's wrath, Satan's wrath and God's wrath are not the same thing, and the promise to the church concerns the last of the three. Jesus says the days of the great tribulation will be cut short for the elect's sake, which implies believers are present to be shortened for. The cosmic signs of the sixth seal match Joel's description of what happens before the great and terrible day of the LORD, so the catching-up is placed exactly there, between the tribulation and the day of the LORD's wrath.

Its hardest problem

The scheme needs a clean seam between “tribulation” and “wrath” that the text never draws in those words. And if the seals are themselves divine judgment (the Lamb is the one opening them), then God's wrath has been in motion since chapter 6, well before the point the system requires.

Post-tribulational

Held by The historic majority reading through most of church history, and today held by many careful evangelical exegetes across traditions, including some who are firmly premillennial.

Its best case

Matthew 24 puts the gathering of the elect by the angels “immediately after the tribulation of those days”, with a trumpet, which is a hard sentence for any earlier scheme. In 2 Thessalonians 2 Paul calms a church that feared it had missed the day by telling them it cannot come until the falling away and the revealing of the man of sin: a strange comfort if the church would have been removed before either. And Scripture's ordinary pattern is preservation through trouble rather than extraction from it: Noah in the ark, Israel in Goshen, the three in the furnace.

Its hardest problem

It strains the imminence texts: if the antichrist must be revealed first, then “ye know not the day nor the hour” is weakened, and the church has a checklist rather than a watch. And it must answer who enters the millennium in natural bodies to be ruled with a rod of iron, if every believer is glorified at the moment of the return.

Imminence

The New Testament tells the church to watch, to be ready, to look for the blessed hope, and it never tells believers to look for the antichrist first. A hope that requires seven years of prerequisites is not the hope those texts describe. Pastorally, imminence produces urgency: a servant whose master may return tonight lives differently from one who has calculated a schedule.

Endurance

The same New Testament tells the church to endure, to overcome, to be faithful unto death, and Revelation's own refrain is spoken to saints who are in the trouble, not above it. Pastorally, endurance produces steel: a church told it will certainly be evacuated may be unprepared for the pressure that has come to Christians in almost every generation and is coming to many now.

The honest thing to notice is that Scripture commands both, and every position on this page has to hold both. A believer who expects to be gone still has to be told to endure, because Christians are being killed for the name this year, whatever the calendar turns out to say. A believer who expects to go through still has to be told to watch. Whatever your conclusion, the instructions do not change.

The Frame It Is Measured Against

the seven years are Daniel's, not John's

Daniel's seventieth week

The seven-year measure every one of these positions is placed against does not come from Revelation at all. It comes from Daniel 9: seventy sevens decreed on Daniel's people, sixty-nine running to the Anointed One and one held back, with a covenant confirmed at its start and broken in the middle. The fall feasts as calendar

The spring feasts were fulfilled to the day in the death, burial, firstfruits and Pentecost of the Messiah. On the reading this site carries, the autumn feasts hold the rest of the pattern: Trumpets the gathering, Atonement Israel's national repentance, Tabernacles God dwelling with men. It is a framework and an expectation, not a date, and no one on this site sets dates.

This Site's Tradition

pre-tribulational, held with open hands

This site's tradition is pre-tribulational: the church is caught up before Daniel's seventieth week opens. Three things carry the reading: the week belongs to Israel, decreed on Daniel's people and city, and Jeremiah names that time Jacob's trouble; the promise to Philadelphia is keeping from the hour rather than through it; and this position leaves the New Testament's imminence intact, with nothing standing between the church and its Lord.

Held without contempt

Post-tribulationism was the ordinary expectation of the church for most of its history, and is held today by exegetes as careful as any pre-tribulationist. A position defended by ridicule is not being defended.

Held without dates

No date is set on this site, and none will be. The founder's roster includes voices who have been burned by prediction; the doctrine is a posture of readiness, not a countdown.

Held without softness

Readiness is not the same as evacuation planning. If the church of Smyrna could be told to be faithful unto death, no reader of this page is exempt from the same instruction.
