1. Genesis 29:34

   Once again Leah conceived and gave birth to a son, and she said, “Now at last my husband will become attached to me, because I have borne him three sons.” So he was named Levi.

   “(Verse 34) And she conceived again, and bore a son, and said: Now my husband will be with me, because I have borne him three sons: therefore she called his name Levi. When we read, 'My husband will be with me,' Aquila interpreted it as, 'My husband will be attached to me,' which is the Hebrew word (), Illave.

2. Genesis 34:1

   Now Dinah, the daughter Leah had borne to Jacob, went out to visit the daughters of the land.

   “- Dinah’s Dishonor This chapter records the rape of Dinah and the revenge of her brothers. Gen 34:1-5 Dinah went out to see the daughters of the land. The Jewish doctors of a later period fix the marriageable age of a female at twelve years and a day. It is probable that Dinah was in her thirteenth year when she went out to visit the daughters of the land. Six or seven years, therefore, must have been spent by Jacob between Sukkoth, where he abode some time, and the neighborhood of Shekerm, where he had purchased a piece of ground.

3. Genesis 35:23

   The sons of Leah were Reuben the firstborn of Jacob, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun.

4. Genesis 49:5–7

5. Exodus 6:16

   These were the names of the sons of Levi according to their records: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. Levi lived 137 years.

Whose sons, according to the order of their birth, were as follow: Gershom, and Kohath, and Merari; see Gen 46:11, and the years of the life of Levi were one hundred and thirty seven years; and exactly the same number of years is assigned him by Polyhistor from Demetrius (c), an Heathen writer.

   “The years of the life of Levi - “Bishop Patrick observes that Levi is thought to have lived the longest of all Jacob’s sons, none of whose ages are recorded in Scripture but his and Joseph’s, whom Levi survived twenty-seven years, though he was much the elder brother. By the common computation this would be twenty-three years: by Kennicott’s computation at the end of Genesis 31. (See Clarke’s note at Gen 31:55) Levi’s birth is placed twenty-four years before that of Joseph; his death, therefore, would be only three years later.

6. 1 Chronicles 2:1

   These were the sons of Israel:

   “These are the sons of Israel,.... Or Jacob, the other son of Isaac, who had the name of Israel given him, because of his power with God, Gen 32:28, whose twelve sons are here mentioned by name; the first four according to their birth of Leah, Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah; then the two sons of Zilpah, Leah's handmaid, Issachar and Zebulun; and between Dan and Naphtali, the sons of Bilhah, Rachel's handmaid, are placed Joseph and Benjamin, the sons of Rachel.

   “The sons of Israel - The order of the names here approximates to an order determined by legitimacy of birth. A single change - the removal of Dan to the place after Benjamin - would give the following result: (1) The six sons of the first wife, Leah. (2) the two sons of the second wife, Rachel. (3) the two sons of the first concubine, Bilhah. (4) the two sons of the second concubine, Zilpah. Dan’s undue prominency may, perhaps, be accounted for by his occupying the seventh place in the “blessing of Jacob” Gen 49:16.
