Chapter summary

Jacob's prophetic blessings upon his twelve sons. Reuben — unstable as water, shall not excel. Simeon and Levi — their anger cursed, scattered in Israel. Judah — ‘the sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be’. Zebulun, Issachar, Dan, Gad, Asher, Naphtali — each receiving a terse, image-rich oracle. Joseph — ‘a fruitful bough by a well, whose branches run over the wall’. Benjamin — ‘a wolf that shall raven’. The messianic line now runs publicly through Judah. Calvin called this chapter ‘the testament of Jacob’ — prophecy spoken with dying breath.

Drafted from Matthew Henry, Calvin, Gill, Clarke, JFB, and Barnes.
