A living hope

‘Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which … hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead’ (1:3).

Suffering

The letter's pastoral occasion — the fiery trial among the churches (4:12). Peter writes so exiles can bear what is coming.
