For Arioch the Chief-Butcher was about to kill both Daniel and his three friends, for he went out to kill the wise men of Babylon. For Scripture said that the Chief-Butcher himself began to take the sword. For even as a butcher kills all creatures and butchers them, in the same way also the rulers of this world kill men, butchering them as unreasoning animals, but Daniel went forth and said, "'For what reason has this reckless proposition come out from the face of the king?'

Captain of the kings guard - Chief of the kings executioners or slaughter men. Margin, רב תבחיא rab tabachaiya, chief of the butchers, he that took off the heads of those whom the king ordered to be slain, because they had in any case displeased him. Go and bring me the head of Giaffer. The honorable butcher went and brought the head in a bag on a dish. It was Herods chief butcher that brought the head of John the Baptist in a dish to the delicate daughter of Herodias. This was the custom of the country.
