Garden - Not in the sepulchre of the kings; probably, by his own choice and command, as a lasting testimony of his sincere repentance and abhorrence of himself for his former crime.

The garden of Uzza - The family sepulcher or burying-place. It is said 2Ki 21:3, 2Ki 21:7, that Manasseh made a grove; and he set a graven image of the grove, etc. וישם את פסל האשרה אשר עשה vaiyasem eth pesel haasherah, asher asah: And he put the graven image of Asherah, which he had made, into the house. Asherah, which we translate grove, is undoubtedly the name of an idol; and probably of one which was carved out of wood. R. S.

Gershom, &c.--This repetition (see 1Ch 6:1) is made, as the historian here begins to trace the genealogy of the Levitical families who were not priests. The list is a long one, comprising the chiefs or heads of their several families until David's reign, who made a new and different classification of them by courses.

Or, to wit, Naaman, &c. so the words are to be connected with these are the sons or Ehud, in the preceding verse: he removed them; to the above place, that is, either Gera, or rather Ehud, he advised them, directed and enjoined them to go thither, as being most convenient for them: and he begat Uzza and Ahihud; after he had removed his other sons.

Commentary on Nehemiah 7:512 voices
He appointed the porters, singers, and Levites, in their places to their work. This is meant of their work in general, which was to attend the temple service; it had been neglected in some degree, but now was revived. God's worship is the defence of a place, and his ministers, when they mind their duty, are watchmen on the walls.
Matthew Henry· Commentary on the Whole Bible, 1710Puritan
Or perhaps one was the account of them when they set out from Babylon with Zerubbabel, the other when they came to Jerusalem. The sum totals are all just the same there and here, except of the singing-men and singing-women, which there are 200, here 245.
