Chapter summary

Jacob's burial and Joseph's last days. Joseph weeps; the physicians embalm; Egypt mourns seventy days; Pharaoh permits the funeral cortege to Canaan. The family buries Jacob in the cave of Machpelah. The brothers, still fearing after their father's death, beg Joseph's forgiveness; he weeps at their mistrust and speaks the chapter's — and the book's — summary theology: ‘ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive’. Joseph dies at 110; he commands that his bones be carried up when God visits them. The book closes with a coffin in Egypt and a promise to be carried home.
