Chapter summary

The exhortation. ‘Hearken, O Israel, unto the statutes and unto the judgments … ye shall not add unto the word which I command you’. The LORD spoke out of the midst of the fire; no form was seen — therefore no graven image, no bowing to the host of heaven. Scattering and restoration foretold for Israel. ‘Did ever people hear the voice of God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as thou hast heard, and live?’ Three cities of refuge east of Jordan appointed by Moses — Bezer, Ramoth, Golan. The chapter closes the first sermon with a double warning and a double grace — remember what you have seen; the LORD is God in heaven above, and upon the earth beneath: there is none else.
