The Voices

Mark Virkler

Virkler's theological project is the practical-pedagogical systematization of hearing-God methodology — the recovery and training of believers in the operative experience of God's voice through specific scripture-anchored practices.

Short bio

Dr. Mark Virkler is an American Charismatic-evangelical teacher, author, and the co-founder (with his wife Patti Virkler) of Communion with God Ministries (CWG; CWGMinistries.org) and Christian Leadership University (CLU; ChristianLeadershipUniversity.com) — an internet-based Christian-formation institution offering Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral programs. He has taught on hearing God's voice for 25+ years across six continents to substantial international audiences, training pastors and lay believers in the practical methodology. His foundational book *Communion with God* (1986; later expanded as *Dialogue with God* and most recently as *4 Keys to Hearing God's Voice* with Patti Virkler) systematized what became the "4 Keys to Hearing God's Voice" framework — methodology that has trained substantial numbers of believers globally and shaped subsequent hearing-God-stream voices. He earned a doctorate (Doctor of Practical Ministry) from Vision International University. His book catalog is substantial — 50+ titles — including *4 Keys to Hearing God's Voice*, *4 Keys to Hearing God's Voice — Teen Edition*, *How to Hear God's Voice*, *How to Walk by the Spirit*, *Counseled by God*, *Naturally Supernatural*, *Through the Bible — How to Apply Scripture* (and the broader CLU / CWG curriculum). He is one of the most-systematized contemporary articulators of hearing-God methodology and has trained substantial portions of the contemporary charismatic-evangelical hearing-God stream.

What they believed

  • Method and Validation — Foundational; the four-keys framework (stillness, vision, spontaneity, journaling) systematizes hearing-God methodology with explicit testing-criteria for validation. Architectural voice in the broader hearing-God-stream — Winship (Tier 1; ★★★ stream peer), Hennessey (Tier 2), Goll (Tier 2 broadly) operate downstream of Virkler's framework.
  • Cessation — Strong continuationist; the framework assumes ongoing Spirit-communication as normative. The believer's training in hearing-God presupposes the operative reality of Spirit-led conversational relationship.
  • Healing in Atonement — Affirmed substantively in inner-healing-and-counseling context; *Counseled by God* integrates hearing-God methodology with inner-healing application. Less heavily-articulated than physical-healing-emphasis stream voices (Hagin, Wigglesworth).
  • Identity vs Performance — Affirmed; *Counseled by God* and broader CWG framework treat identity-in-Christ as foundation for hearing-God and walking-by-Spirit. Functionally aligned with Bevere/Winship/Bill Johnson ★★★ stream.
  • Prophetic Office Today — The gift of prophecy continues operatively for ordinary believers through the hearing-God framework — though Virkler's distinction is that the framework trains all believers in conversational-hearing rather than recognizing-only-specific-prophetic-office. The prophetic dimension is broadly distributed.
  • Disciplines Emphasis — Affirmed substantively; the four-keys framework is itself a discipline-of-the-inner-life framework. Stillness, journaling, sustained vision-cultivation are spiritual-disciplines in the broader Willard / Foster classical tradition.
