J.I. Packer

James Innell Packer (July 22, 1926 – July 17, 2020) was an English-born Canadian theologian, Anglican priest, and one of the most influential evangelical authors of the 20th century. Educated at Oxford (Corpus Christi, then Wycliffe Hall), he was ordained Anglican in 1952 and earned his D.Phil. on Richard Baxter and the Puritan tradition in 1954. He taught at Tyndale Hall Bristol, Trinity College Bristol, and from 1979 until his death at Regent College, Vancouver. He served as general editor of the English Standard Version (ESV, 2001) and as a signatory and chief drafter of the 1978 Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy. *Knowing God* (1973) sold over 1.5 million copies and was named to *Christianity Today*'s "Top 50 Books that Have Shaped Evangelicals." He published over 300 articles and approximately 30 books.

• Fear of the Lord Emphasis — The fear of the Lord is the necessary fruit of knowing God's attributes — reverence is the right response to holiness. Packer joins fear-of-the-lord to godliness; the Puritan synthesis. He critiques both legalistic dread and casual familiarity as malformations.
• Cost of Following — Discipleship is godliness — the Puritan synthesis of orthodoxy, holiness, and the means of grace. Packer joins cost-of-following to a robust doctrine of grace; cheap-grace evangelicalism is rejected, but so is performance-driven spirituality. Holiness is the fruit of grace, not its precondition.
• Rapture Timing — Packer is non-dispensational; he rejects the Lindsey/Scofield pre-tribulation rapture system. His eschatology is broadly amillennial with historic-premillennial sympathies — Christ returns once, in glory, to judge and to consummate the kingdom. He treats rapture-timing as a relatively minor question.
• Cessation — "Soft cessationist." The foundational sign-gifts (apostolic-era authenticating miracles, prophecy as new revelation) ceased with the apostolic era; the Spirit's ongoing work in conviction, illumination, and sanctification continues. Packer engaged charismatic leaders irenically while holding cessationist conclusions; sharply critical of charismatic excess.
• Penal Substitution — Penal substitution is the central interpretive category for the atonement; not one theory among many but the lens through which the others (Christus Victor, ransom, exemplar) become coherent. Christ bore in our place the just penalty for our sins, satisfying divine justice and securing our justification.
• Inerrancy — Scripture is the inerrant, infallible word of God; the Chicago Statement (1978) is its definitive modern articulation. Packer was a primary drafter. Inerrancy includes accurate teaching about history, science (where Scripture speaks), and theology — not merely on matters of faith and practice.
