Short bio

Dr. Hugh Norman Ross (born July 24, 1945) is a Canadian astrophysicist, Christian apologist, and the founder (1986, with his wife Kathy) of Reasons to Believe (Sierra Madre, California) — the principal contemporary old-earth-concordism / progressive-creationism apologetic ministry. He earned a B.Sc. in physics from the University of British Columbia and a Ph.D. in astronomy from the University of Toronto. He is among the most-prominent astronomer-apologists in evangelical Christianity. His book catalog includes *The Creator and the Cosmos* (multiple editions), *Navigating Genesis*, *Why the Universe Is the Way It Is*, *More Than a Theory*, *Improbable Planet*, and many more. The framework is sharply contested by Young-Earth Creationism (Answers in Genesis, Institute for Creation Research) on one side and by mainstream-secular naturalism on the other.

What they believed

  • Creation Framework — Old-earth progressive-day-age creationism. Universe billions of years old; Genesis 1 days are long ages; life appeared through progressive divine intervention. The framework engages mainstream cosmology and planetary science substantively while maintaining supernatural-creation commitment.
  • Flood Geology — Local-flood reading of Noah's flood (Genesis 6–9). The framework holds the flood was real, divinely-judgment-purposed, and historically substantive — but regional rather than global, with the scientific evidence supporting localized rather than worldwide catastrophic flood.
  • Intelligent Design Status — Ross's framework is broadly ID-friendly without strict ID-movement partisan alignment. He affirms intelligent design at cosmological-fine-tuning and biological-information levels while distinguishing his progressive-creationism from ID's typically agnostic-on-mechanisms-and-timing posture.
  • Inerrancy — Strong inerrantist; Ross's framework is built on Scripture's inerrancy as foundation. The interpretive question is reading-method, not biblical-authority.
  • Literary Genre Discernment — Genesis 1–11 requires careful genre-discernment — literal-historical with substantive theological-poetic dimensions. The day-age reading depends on Hebrew lexical-grammatical analysis of *yom* in context.
