The Tabernacle as Template

Moses was shown a pattern on the mountain and commanded to build according to it. The New Testament calls the whole structure a shadow — not a metaphor of our making, but a deliberate figure named by Scripture itself. Seven elements, each with an explicit NT fulfillment verse.

The Pattern

“And look that thou make them after their pattern, which was shewed thee in the mount.”

Exodus 25:40 · cited again in Hebrews 8:5

Hebrews 8:5 names the Tabernacle priests as serving the example and shadow of heavenly things. Hebrews 10:1 names the law as holding a shadow of good things to come. The typology is not imposed on the text — it is how the New Testament itself reads the Tabernacle.

The Seven Elements

For each element: the Old Testament description, the type it represents in Scripture’s own terms, and the explicit New Testament fulfillment.

The Brazen Altar

The Object — Old Testament
  • Exodus 27:1

    And thou shalt make an altar of shittim wood, five cubits long, and five cubits broad; the altar shall be foursquare: and the height thereof shall be three cubits.

  • Exodus 27:2

    And thou shalt make the horns of it upon the four corners thereof: his horns shall be of the same: and thou shalt overlay it with brass.

  • Leviticus 1:4

    And he shall put his hand upon the head of the burnt offering; and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him.

The Type

The first object encountered on entering the court — the place of sacrificial death. Every approach to God began with blood here.

The Fulfillment — New Testament
  • Hebrews 13:10

    We have an altar, whereof they have no right to eat which serve the tabernacle.

  • Hebrews 13:12

    Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate.

The Bronze Laver

The Object — Old Testament
  • Exodus 30:18

    Thou shalt also make a laver of brass, and his foot also of brass, to wash withal: and thou shalt put it between the tabernacle of the congregation and the altar, and thou shalt put water therein.

  • Exodus 30:20

    When they go into the tabernacle of the congregation, they shall wash with water, that they die not;

The Type

Between the altar and the Holy Place — priests washed hands and feet before serving. Cleansing by water after the sacrifice of blood.

The Fulfillment — New Testament
  • Ephesians 5:26

    That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

  • Titus 3:5

    Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

  • Hebrews 10:22

    Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

Holy Place
The Object — Old Testament
  • Exodus 25:31

    And thou shalt make a candlestick of pure gold: of beaten work shall the candlestick be made: his shaft, and his branches, his bowls, his knops, and his flowers, shall be of the same.

    And thou shalt make the seven lamps thereof: and they shall light the lamps thereof, that they may give light over against it.

The Type

South side of the Holy Place. Seven lamps of beaten gold, the only light in a windowless sanctuary.

The Fulfillment — New Testament
  • John 8:12

    Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

The Table of Showbread

    Thou shalt also make a table of shittim wood: two cubits shall be the length thereof, and a cubit the breadth thereof, and a cubit and a half the height thereof.

    And thou shalt take fine flour, and bake twelve cakes thereof: two tenth deals shall be in one cake.

  • Leviticus 24:8

    Every sabbath he shall set it in order before the LORD continually, being taken from the children of Israel by an everlasting covenant.

The Type

North side of the Holy Place. Twelve loaves — one per tribe — continually before the LORD.

The Fulfillment — New Testament
  • John 6:35

    And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

  • John 6:51

    I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever:

The Altar of Incense

  • Exodus 30:1

    And thou shalt make an altar to burn incense upon: of shittim wood shalt thou make it.

  • Exodus 30:7

    And Aaron shall burn thereon sweet incense every morning: when he dresseth the lamps, he shall burn incense upon it.

  • Leviticus 16:12

    And he shall take a censer full of burning coals of fire from off the altar before the LORD, and his hands full of sweet incense beaten small, and bring it within the vail:

The Type

Immediately before the veil, on the west side of the Holy Place. The incense ascended continually.

The Fulfillment — New Testament
  • Revelation 8:3

    And another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given unto him much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne.

  • Revelation 8:4

    And the smoke of the incense, which came with the prayers of the saints, ascended up before God out of the angel's hand.

  • Hebrews 7:25

    Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

The Veil

Holy Place
The Object — Old Testament
  • Exodus 26:31

    And thou shalt make a vail of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen of cunning work: with cherubims shall it be made:

  • Exodus 26:33

    And the vail shall divide unto you between the holy place and the most holy.

The Type

Separated the Holy Place from the Holy of Holies. Torn from top to bottom at the moment of Christ's death.

The Fulfillment — New Testament
  • Matthew 27:51

    And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;

  • Hebrews 10:19

    Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,

  • Hebrews 10:20

    By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;

The Ark of the Covenant with Mercy Seat

Holy of Holies

  • Exodus 25:10

    And they shall make an ark of shittim wood: two cubits and a half shall be the length thereof, and a cubit and a half the breadth thereof, and a cubit and a half the height thereof.

  • Exodus 25:17

    And thou shalt make a mercy seat of pure gold: two cubits and a half shall be the length thereof, and a cubit and a half the breadth thereof.

  • Exodus 25:22

    And there I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat,

  • Leviticus 16:14

    And he shall take of the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it with his finger upon the mercy seat eastward;

The Type

The only object in the Holy of Holies. The high priest sprinkled blood on the mercy seat once a year on Yom Kippur. The Septuagint word for 'mercy seat' is ἱλαστήριον — the same word Paul uses of Christ in Romans 3:25.

The Fulfillment — New Testament
  • Romans 3:25

    Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

  • Hebrews 9:11

    But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;

  • Hebrews 9:12

    Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

  • Hebrews 4:16

    Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

Matthew Henry

Commentary on Exodus 25 and Hebrews 9 (public domain via CCEL). Henry treats each Tabernacle element as a pedagogic figure, arguing the typology is built into the Mosaic institution by design — the pattern Moses was shown on the mountain.

John Owen

Exposition of the Epistle to the Hebrews (1668–1684, public domain). Owen's seven-volume commentary treats Hebrews 8–10 as the NT's authorized guide to Tabernacle typology — the shadow-substance hermeneutic comes from Hebrews 8:5 and 10:1, not from allegory.
