Chapter summary
Israel goes down into Egypt. At Beersheba God speaks to Jacob in visions of the night: ‘fear not … I will there make of thee a great nation; I will go down with thee into Egypt, and I will also surely bring thee up again’. The seventy souls of the house of Jacob are numbered. Judah is sent ahead to prepare. Joseph falls on his father's neck and weeps a good while. The shepherd household is settled in Goshen, apart from the Egyptians, because every shepherd is an abomination to them. The separation preserves the identity of Israel through four centuries in the land of their sojourn.
