Chapter summary

The seventh-day rest, then the garden. The creation account narrows from cosmos to Eden: a river in four heads, trees for food, the tree of life at the centre and the tree of knowledge forbidden. Adam is put in the garden to dress and keep it — vocation precedes the fall. The animals are named; none is a fit helper. Then the woman, built from the man's side — bone of his bone, flesh of his flesh — and marriage is instituted before any sin. Henry notes the sacredness of this first institution; Calvin emphasises that companionship was God's design, not a concession.

Drafted from Matthew Henry, Calvin, Gill, Clarke, JFB, and Barnes.
