MANNAFEST

Chesed and Emunah

Loyal-love and faithfulness — the Hebrew pair of Lamentations 3:22–23.

Primary passage:Lamentations 3:22

The two great covenant-character words stand together in one text: "It is of the LORD's mercies (chesed) that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness (emunah)" (Lam 3:22–23, KJV). Chesed is the refrain of Psalm 136 — twenty-six times, "for his mercy endureth for ever" — rendered by the LXX's eleos and echoed in Luke 1's songs. Emunah is the firmness of Habakkuk 2:4, "the just shall live by his faith" — the line the New Testament quotes three times (Rom 1:17; Gal 3:11; Heb 10:38).
